The sports have begun! This Saturday was the stuff of legends with so many games. I woke up as early as possible to watch as many games as possible (Gold Zone is pretty helpful).
Here's how it's going to work. Instead of going by every single game (which becomes a 50-minute read 😂), we’re going to go by sport (which takes half of the time away). A few paragraphs describing everything that happened.
Well, what are you waiting for? Scroll down!
Badminton:
The badminton events began at about 8:00 A.M. EST and kinda did disappoint at the start. Out of 11 games, only 3 of them weren’t straight sweeps. After about 5 hours without badminton, it was the same thing for the next 12 games. Only 3 weren’t straight sweeps.
Regardless, these games were still ones you need to watch.
Rugby Sevens:
Cue up the celebration, the French have won a Gold Medal!
What an upset this is! I never ever thought that the French would win a gold medal, especially against Fiji, the defending champions, in rugby. What a surprise this is.
France finished first. Fiji finished second (two straight medal finishes for them). South Africa finished third. Pretty sweet for the French, eh?
Men’s Tennis:
With the rain in France earlier in the day, about 7 games weren’t played. But, Nadal and Alcaraz vs Gonzalez and Molteni was an amazing game (with Alcaraz making most of the errors and Nadal playing flawlessly. No. I’m not joking.) Djokovic absolutely demolished Matthew Ebden. Alcaraz did the same against Hady Habib.
All in all a very good tennis day.
Women’s Tennis:
Naomi Osaka lost AGAIN in straight sets. Caroline Garcia of France lost to Romanian Jaqueline Adina Cristian. The US doubles team Gauff and Pegula won in straight sets against Australians Perez and Saville.
All in all, a very good tennis day.
Judo Men’s:
Judo today was incredibly fun to watch. Ryuju Nagayama of Japan took bronze. With Judo having 2 bronze winners, Francisco Garrigos of Spain also took bronze. Luka Mkheidze of France took silver and Yeldos Smetov of Kazakhstan took gold.
Judo Women’s:
Judo today was incredibly fun to watch. Shirine Boukli of France got France’s first medal of the Olympics (Bronze). With Judo having 2 bronze winners, Tara Babulfath of Norway also collected a bronze medal. In the end, though, Natsumi Tsunoda of Japan took Gold, and Baasankhuu Bavuudorj of Mongolia took Silver.
Men’s Handball:
Today, the men’s handball division began and Spain, Egypt, Croatia, Norway, Germany, and Denmark each won a game.
Men’s Football (Soccer):
Argentina won against Iraq
The Dominican Republic lost against Spain
Ukraine won versus Morocco
Uzbekistan lost vs Egypt
New Zealand lost against the US
Israel lost vs Paraguay
France barely won against Guinea
Japan barely won against Mali
Men’s Surfing:
Ethan Ewing 🇦🇺, Joan Duru 🇫🇷, Alonso Correa 🇵🇪, Gabriel Medina 🇧🇷, Joao Chianca 🇧🇷, John John Florence 🇺🇸, Grifin Colapinto 🇺🇸, and Reo Inaba 🇯🇵 made it straight to round 3. 16 other people made it to round 2.
Women’s Surfing:
Because the event was going on at the time of me writing this, I am not able to provide you the latest update on this event.
Men’s Field Hockey:
This is what I say was the most entertaining event of the day. Hockey was pretty fun, with many close-contested battles (like India vs New Zealand), high-scoring battles (Netherlands vs South Africa), and plain old blowouts (Germany vs France).
If you did not watch a field hockey game today, you'd better watch the ones tomorrow!
Women’s Fencing:
This was another pretty fun event. This fencing event was called the Women’s Epee Individual. For the bronze medal, Eszter Muhari of Hungary claimed it. The silver medal was claimed by Auriane Mallo Breton of France. Gold was claimed by Man Wai Vivian Kong of Hong Kong. It’s Hong Kong’s 3rd in history.
Men’s Fencing.
Fun event here. This fencing event was called Men’s Sabre Individual. In third place came Luigi Samale of Italy. In 2nd came Fares Ferjani. In first came Sanguk Oh.
Boxing Men’s and Women’s:
I personally do not know what to say about this event, but I do know one thing.
The referees were incredibly bad.
Every few seconds they would stop play and wouldn’t let the opponent finish them off.
Women’s Water Polo:
The United States and Spain absolutely demolished their opponents. Meanwhile, Australia and China had won the most low-scoring battles and Netherlands and Hungary were the only two countries who actually had a solid water polo game.
Table Tennis:
Obviously one of my favorite sports at the Olympics. Kanak Jha kicked off the event with a 4-0 victory. Then on, until about 11:15 A.M. EST, the closest game we ever saw was 4-2. And it was a doubles match.
The biggest upset of the day was when North Korea won against Japan. In table tennis!
Men’s Swimming:
Many swimming events began today and it started with the Men’s 400-meter Freestyle Final. These were the medalists.
Then in the 4x100 Freestyle Relay, here are the winners.
Women’s Swimming
Here are the winners of the Women’s 400m Freestyle.
Here are the medalists of the Women’s 4x100 Freestyle Relay
Beach Volleyball:
In beach volleyball today, only one game went to 3 sets.
Men’s Volleyball:
Cycling Road:
Canoe Slalom:
Another one of my favorite events (at least this year). Here are the top 5 in the men’s category.
Here are the top 5 in the women’s category. For the women, they weren’t using a canoe, but actually a kayak. The canoe event for them comes a bit later.
Basketball:
After a few beatdowns earlier in the day, we saw some good basketball matches towards the end, especially France vs Brazil which was such a good game.
And that’s it for this one. If you enjoyed it, please leave a like down below and subscribe to Sports Square. Also…
